[Class 15 (ii)] Compositions for the production of waterinsoluble azo dyes on the fibre are made by mixing an alkali metal nitrite, an alkali, a coupling component, and a diazotizable alkalisoluble aminoarylsulphonic acid amide of the, general formula NH2-R-SO2-NH-R<1>, wherein R = an aryl residue which may contain an arylazo group and R<1> = H, alkyl, hydroxyalkyl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, the components being free from SO3H or COOH groups. Neutral salts, e.g. sodium sulphate, maybe present in the mixtures. Dyeings or printings are obtained by applying the compositions to the fibre, drying and developing with acid or acid salts. Examples are given of compositions containing 1-aminobenzene-3- sulphanilide and 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid o-anisidide, alpha-naphthalide, or p-toluidide, or 4:41 - di(acetoacetylamino) - 3:3<1>- dimethyldiphenyl, and of the use of such compositions in printing cotton. Specifications 262,537, 287,651, and 297,374, [all in Class 15 (ii)], are referred to. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2(5) of additional compositions containing as the sulphonamide component 1-aminobenzene - 2 - sulphonic acid. o - anisidide, 4 - amino - 2:5 - dimethylazobenzene - 3<1> - sulph - anilide, and 4-amino-2:5-dimethoxyazobenzene- 2<1>-sulphanilide. Samples have also been furnished of dyeings or printings on cotton or viscose artificial silk from these and from other compositions containing as the sulphonamide component 1 - aminobenzene - 3 - sulphamide, 1 - aminobenzene - 2 -, 3 - or 4 - sulphanilide, 4 - amino - 2:5 - dimethylazobenzene - 21 - sulphanilide, 1 - methoxy - 2 - aminobenzene - 4.- sulpbo - o - anisidide, and 4 - amino - biphenylene-4<1>-sulphanilide.
