Abstract
516,880. Depriving sand, barytes and clay of iron. ROCKWARE GLASS SYNDICATE, Ltd., and ADAMS, F. W. July 11, 1938, No. 20538. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] Sand, barytes; china clays and like materials are purified by removing the iron as volatile ferric chloride, by passing the sand &c. downwardly in counter-current to ammonium chloride vapour and dry air or other inert gas at a temperature above 350 ‹C., preferably above 400‹C. Heated dry sand is fed into a hopper 1 and released by a cone 4 controlled by a screw 5. The released sand falls through plates 6, 7, 8, 9 with apertures of decreasing size but closer proximity, to a collecting place 3c. Ammonium chloride vapour is admitted at 10 and air at 16. The air passes through a coil 15 in the hot purified sand and is so heated before impinging on the baffle plates 17 which distribute it evenly in the column 3. The reaction gases pass off by a pipe 11 and are passed into water to precipitate ferric hydroxide and re-form ammonium chloride which is recovered by crystallization. A box 12 catches sand carried ore. The time of contact of the sand with the ammonium chloride vapour is determined by the position of the cone 4 and the velocity of the upward air current.
