Abstract
516,804. Engine governors. DAVEY, PAXMAN & CO. (COLCHESTER), Ltd., and PAXMAN, E. P. July 8, 1938,'No. 20293. [Class 135] A servomotor engine governor having a second servomotor for adjusting the spring load on the governor has the loading spring arranged between a pair of pistons contained within the second servomotor cylinder. The governor weights 1 act through a ball bearing 31 on a tubular control valve 26 having an annular pressure inlet recess 27 and exhaust port 30 adapted to co-operate with a ported follow-up sleeve to control the supply and exhaust of pressure fluid to and from the upper side of a piston 25. The follow-up sleeve is integral with the piston 25 and is secured to a bell-crank lever 37 whereby movements of the piston are transmitted to the control rack of an engine fuel injection pump, steam valve or other engine element to be regulated. The governor is loaded by a series of springs 9, 10, 11 arranged between a pair of pistons 8, 12 to come into operation successively as the lower piston is raised. This piston is operated by fluid pressure under the control of a manually operated piston valve 6 having a pressure inlet recess 18 and an exhaust' port 19 adapted to co-operate with ports 17 in a follow-up sleeve 13 secured to the piston. According to the Provisional Specification a manually operated device is provided for opening the fuel pump inlets during starting of the engine and as the oil pressure builds up it supersedes the hand operation. An additional manual control and spring can be provided to stop the operation of the piston and lock the whole fuel pump system. The hand lever which controls the governor loading may form part of the control gear of the boat or automobile so that as the main control wheel or lever is moved to various positions such as ahead, neutral or reverse the loading is adjusted at appropriate times and to the required extent.
