516,403. Catalytic apparatus ; catalysts. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges.). Aug. 2, 1938, No. 22865. [Class 1 (i)] [Also in Group IV] In the catalytic production of hydrocarbons containing more than 2 carbon atoms from carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a liquid medium (which may be the reaction product) the medium is passed along the outside of the catalyst chamber, preferably in counter-current to the direction of the reactants within, and is then passed through the catalyst chamber in the same direction as the reactants. In the apparatus shown, Fig. 3, the gaseous reactants enter the catalyst tubes K at N and leave at O, and the liquid medium enters at L and leaves at O ; the reactants may be mixed with the liquid medium before entering the tubes K. In an example the gas mixture is preheated in a heater T, Fig. 4, and led at 120 atmospheres through a supply pipe N into the catalyst tube K. The liquid medium is pumped by a pump P from a separator B through a preheater H and enters at L into the annular space M and thence into 'the catalyst tube K. The catalyst may be made by sintering or fusing iron powder containing small additions of titanium oxide, manganous oxide, and potassium hydroxide in a current of oxygen and then treating with a current of hydrogen at 650‹C. The reaction products and the liquid medium leave at O and pass through a cooler S to the separator B from which uncondensed gases pass .through a cooler R and oil-washer C to separate further benzine hydrocarbons.
