Abstract

516,195. Disinfectants and deodorants. McCLELLAN, W. July 14, 1938, No. 20856. [Class 81 (i)] A water-soluble solid composition for antiseptic, disinfectant and deodorant purposes is made by adding a tar acid to a soap base prepared by melting and continued heating of a hard water-bearing soap until all free aqueous content has been removed, thoroughly mixing and boiling the mass, and cooling and casting or moulding the same into tablets or the like, the tar acid and soap base being respectively proportioned so that the resultant product contains from 55 to 60 per cent. of pure cresylic acid. Resin or other suitable filling agents may also be added. The hard soap base may be made from a mixture of fats and oils including stearine or other animal fats, castor, olive, pahn or linseed oils or soft animal fats, e.g., lard oil or hardened vegetable oils. For temperate climates a mixture of stearine and either linseed or castor oil with a slight excess of the latter is preferably used but for hot climates a mixture containing up to 50 per cent. of stearine. While in cold climates up to 60 per cent. of oil may be used. Where appearance is unimportant tar acids other than cresylic acid particularly those of higher boiling point may be used instead of cresylic acid. Specification 4415/15, [Class 81 (i)], is referred to.
