Abstract
516,022. Screw conveyers. AHLMANN, N. June 18, .1938, No. 18191. Addition to 457,541. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Groups XII and XIII] In the method claimed in the parent Specification the material to be heated or cooled is moved upwards through a vertical or substantially vertical container 1 by a rotating screw 2 or its equivalent having such dimensions and such speed in relation to the coefficients of friction between the material and the screw, and the material and wall, that the material will move up the inner wall of the container in a helical path of flat pitch. In the cooler shown the material is fed by the worm 8 and is discharged through the shoot 16, while cooling is effected by water delivered through the pipe 17. In a modification, a feed hopper opens directly into the lower end of the container and a stirrer is fitted at the lower end of the screw shaft. The equivalent of a screw may be formed by flights helically arranged on a cylindrical cage of vertical bars. In a cement plant a mill may discharge into the feed hopper of the cooler, and the container may be of such height that it can discharge on to a conveyer arranged not lower than the mill.
