515,340. Photo-electric headlight-testers. BURGESS, A. F. (Weaver Manufacturing Co.). June 21, 1938, No. 18384. [Class 40 (iii)] [Also in Group XX] Manufacturing In apparatus for testing the headlights of automobiles of the kind including a photoelectric cell for measuring the intensity of the beam of light emitted therefrom, the cell 39, Fig. 1, is vertically adjustable on an optical device which is adjustable both vertically and horizontally upon a portable support 13, and which includes a casing 23, Fig. 3, having a lens 26 and a mirror 27 for projecting an image of the headlights on to a ground-glass screen 28. The screen bears cross-lines 29, 31, Fig. 4, for indicating when the centre of the lens is directly in front of the centre of the headlight. The cell 39 is enclosed in a casing 37 having an aperture 38 and vertically slidable on the casing 23 which is slidable along horizontal bars 18, 19 mounted on an adjustable frame 17 connected by links 15 to the support 13. The frame carries a projection screen having an horizontal mark 22 thereon in alignment with the lens 26. In operation, the apparatus is placed in front of the headlight and the frame 17 is adjusted until the image 51, Fig. 4, formed by the lens is at the centre of the cross-lines 29, 31 in which position the lens is at the same height as, and directly in front of. the light. The apparatus is then moved to or from the light until a red image 52 formed by light reflected from a mirror 33 through a red lens 34 is in the line 29, in which position the apparatus is at a predetermined distance from the light. Sights 47, 48 permit accurate alignment of the apparatus with the longitudinal axis of the automobile. The cell is then adjusted vertically on the casing 23, which is simultaneously adjusted laterally, until the reading of the ammeter 42 connected to the cell is a maximum, when the direction of the beam may be read on a scale marked on the casing. The cell may then be located in a position corresponding to the desired direction of the beam, and the light adjusted until the cell gives a maximum reading. The intensity of the beam may also be measured by focusing the light until a maximum reading is obtained.
