Abstract

515,303. Field control of D.C. motors. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and FOX, K. M. April 25, 1938, No. 12355. [Class 38 (iii)] The field 4 of a motor 1 is fed from a potentiometer resistance 5 in circuit with which is a variable voltage source 6 by adjustment of which the variation of voltage applied to the field effected by a given movement of the potentiometer 5 can be made of any desired value. The invention is applicable particularly to multimotor drives in which the motors 1 are fed from a variable voltage source 2, 3, the regulator 10 for the field 11 of a generator 6 connected in circuit with the potentiometer 9 across a constant potential source 7, 8 being adjusted to give low voltage across the potentiometer when the motor speed is high and a higher voltage when the motor speed is low. Thus for a given adjustment of the potentiometer, a smaller charge in the voltage applied to the motor field is effected at high speed than at low speed. The generator 6 may be replaced by a variable resistance and may be common to a number of motors. The constant voltage source 7, 8 may be constituted by the source 2, 3.
