Abstract
514,791. Filling and emptying tanks. STAN CLIFFE, C. W., and WINGET, Ltd. May 16, 1938, No. 14554. [Class 26] [Also in Group XVII] A tank for delivering liquids; e.g., to machines such as concrete mixers which are refilled from supplies which may differ in pressure, of the type in which an inlet valve is shut off by the liquid acting on a float &c. to determine the upper r permitted level is arranged so that the pressure in a supply pipe 3, Figs. 1 and 2, opens the inlet valve 15 when a pivot valve 21 is opened by the fall of the liquid level, by causing the liquid supply to act on the rear face of a piston 13 which is of greater area than that of the inlet 9 of the inlet valve. An exit pipe 42 adjustable from an arm 60 determines the lowest permissible level, a connection with the inlet mechanism ensuring that inflow and outflow do not occur simultaneously, this connection consisting of a weighted cam 70 acted on by a projection 72 when pipe 42 is raised to free arm 30 of the ball cock. Raising and lowering of pipe 42 may be effected through a connection 67 from the raising and lowering of a mixer hopper. Instead of a ball cock, the tank may be supported on one arm of a balance so that its downward movement when filled to the required level alters the position relative to the inlet valve of a fixed arm equivalent to arm 30 Movement of the scale beam may alternatively be arranged to actuate the pilot valve through electrical or other means. The pilot valve may pass through the centre of the inlet valve, and an air chamber for absorbing shock may be incorporated in the inlet pipe.
