Abstract
514,773. Resilient mountings. HORROCKS, W. A., and ROWLANDS, S. M. March 19, 1938, No. 8519. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXI] An aeroplane &c. engine is mounted on rubber or like supports disposed normal to a radial line 11 passing through the axis about which torque oscillations take place, the rubber being disposed between an abutment on the engine foot 10 and a second abutment pivotally connected tc the supporting structure. These supports may be connected by torsion rods for absorbing any yawing couple set up when turning and due to the gyroscopic effect of the airscrew. In Fig. 1 a bracket 12 bolted to the foot 10 carries a tube 13 at right angles to the line 11, provided with cylindrical rubber bushes 14, 15 which are also attached to a tube 16 which is pivoted at 20 to the frame. A load P on the engine foot may be resolved into a shear force on the rubber acting along the tube 13 and a compressive force on the rubber giving rise to a couple 2Qr, the latter being balanced by a couple about the pivot M. If the shear and radial or compressive stiffness of the rubber is known then values r, s for the arms of the couples may be selected such that under vertical loading the nett lateral movement between the engine foot and the engine mounting is zero, or may be reduced to any desired small dimension.
