Abstract
514,503. Thermally-actuated valves. SAFETY GAS DEVICES, Ltd., RABINOWICZ, M., and KESTENBAUM, I. May 7, 1938, No. 13702. [Class 135] A safety cut-off for the main gas burner of a water heater comprises a main gas valve actuated by a thermo-responsive member subject to the heat of an auxiliary burner the supply of gas to which is controlled by a valve actuated by means dependent on the water supply so arranged that in the event of the supply failing the gas supply is interrupted. In the form shown in the Figure the gas and water valves are arranged coaxially the gas cock d being actuated by a handle and the water valve a by a member f pivoted to an arm g on the valve spindle e. This member is normally pressed by a spring into operative engagement with an arm k on the handle l so that the gas cock is opened widely when the water valve is opened. By moving the member f against the action of the spring i it may be disconnected from the projection k to permit independent adjustment of the valves. The gas cock is urged to its closed position by a spring but when opened is returned open by a thermally-actuated catch in a manner similar to that described in Specification 505,894. The gas cock has a main gas passage p and two peripheral grooves r, v. The groove r is connected by a passage q with the main gas passage and is connected by a passage s with a chamber t in the cock casing. This chamber which houses the valve controlling the auxiliary burner is connected by a passage u, peripheral groove v and passages wand x to the auxiliary burner. If the pilot burner and control valve are arranged on the same side of the main cock the groove v is dispensed with. The auxiliary control valve comprises a spring-loaded lift-valve actuated by a piston or diaphragm subject to the pressure in the water supply conduit between the water supply valve and the heater. The piston or. diaphragm chamber may be connected to the throat of a Venturi pipe or ejector in the water supply conduit.
