Abstract

514,501. Mounting electric batteries on vehicles. MORRISON, A. C., and ASSOCIATED ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS, Ltd. May 7, 1938, No. 13690. [Class 79 (iii)] Batteries are mounted' in electrically propelled vehicles by means of T irons, or other members providing a lateral fin like flange or projection, attached to the sides of the battery boxes and adapted to ride between rollers or other antifriction members carried by the vehicle frame. The T irons or the like are extended beyond the battery so as to be still supported between the rollers &c. when the battery is partly withdrawn for inspection &c. and also to facilitate re-insertion after complete withdrawal. In the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5, bars 3 with horizontal flanges 3a attached to the sides of a battery 1, are adapted each to be supported between a pair of lower rollers 19, 20 and an upper roller 21 carried on the vehicle frame, the bars extending beyond the boxes so that the battery may be still supported when partly withdrawn. When inserting a battery the ends of thebars may test on the rollers 20 while the battery is lifted, then being pushed in under the rollers 21. The rollers 19 may, as shown, be somewhat lower than the rollers 20 so that, with weighing down of the frame, the battery 1 is horizontal when partly withdrawn for inspection. The bar 3 at one side of the box may be lower than the other, so that when batteries are inserted from opposite sides of a vehicle the projecting ends of the bars may overlap. The rollers 19... 21 are carried by brackets 7 attached to the vehicle frame members 4, opposite brackets being braced by a cross beam 10. Each bracket comprises a pair of plates 8, 9, bolted to the cross beam 10 and secured to the frame member 4 by angle plates 11, one of which is extended to reinforce a bracket 16 to which one end of the vehicle spring 6 may be attached. The rollers are each rotatably mounted on the projecting end of a sleeve 24 passing through and welded in the plates 8, 9, being held thereon by a washer on the end of a bolt passing through the sleeve and secured by a nut 28. Modifications are described, one in which, Figs. 10... 16 (not shown), with a lower vehicle frame, the lower rollers are directly mounted in a cross beam resting on the frame longitudinals whilst the upper roller is mounted in a bracket attached to the beam, and another, Fig. 17 (not shown), in which, with a combined body and frame, the rollers are carried by brackets attached to the underneath part of such frame.
