Abstract

514,500. Suppositories. THYER, E. G S., and PRENTIF, Ltd. May 7, 1938, No. 13688. [Classes 81 (i) and 81 (ii)] A fusible suppository comprises two parts, one of which is formed with a recess so dimensioned that the other can be fitted therein immediately prior to use, each of the parts containing a substance which reacts with a substance in the other part to produce a medicated foam on insertion in a body cavity. The parts are constructed of a solid material such as glyco-gelatine which melts or dissolves when in use and one part may contain an alkaline substance and the other an acid substance, which substances react to produce a gas. An example is sodium bicarbonate and citric or tartaric acid, the proportions being 3-5 per cent. of the fusible base. Alternatively, the reactant materials may be mixed in the dry state in one part, the other part containing water, the fusion of the two parts causing the reactant materials to produce the foam. Various medicants and antiseptic compounds such as hexyl-resorcinol, ichthyol and acriflavine and substances for increasing the stability of the foam and reducing surface tension may be added to the reactant materials. The two parts are preferably conical or bullet shaped.
