Abstract

513,526. Electro-medical apparatus. HINDERS, Ltd., and EDWARDS, W. G. April 4, 1938, No. 10253. [Class 81(ii)] Apparatus for administering electricity for medical purposes comprises a manually controlled surger wherein the control means at least of the surger are mounted separately from the induction coil or other source of current, so as to be movable relative thereto, and are so constructed and disposed that they may be actuated by the operator while both his hands are engaged in manipulating the electrodes or the patient. The control means may be mounted on one of the electrodes or may be foot operated while they may be connected to the source of current by flexible electrical or mechanical connections. A combined electrode and surger unit comprises two concentric tubes 4 and 5 of square section and composed of insulating material. Between the tubes is wound an electrical resistance wire 6 connected to binding posts 7 and 8. A metal block 9, slidable within the inner tube carries a spring 10 which projects through a longitudinal slot in the wall of the inner tube to contact with the resistance. The apparatus is adjusted by pressing the block downwards against spring 14, which connects the block to the electrode 12, by means of rod 15 made of insulating material. The current may be interrupted at a predetermined low value by covering the lower part of the resistance with insulation or by limiting the length of the slot. The apparatus may be connected across the terminals of the induction coil a second electrode being connected to the binding post 8.
