Abstract

512,732. Decanting liquids. ESCRITT, L. B., and WHITEHOUSE, P. G. March 17, 1938, No. 8254. [Class 46] Means for decanting or removing a stratum of fluid at a desired depth below the surface, for example in digestion tanks for sewage sludge, comprises an inner discharge tube b open at the top and extending at its lower end through the wall or floor of the receptacle, and a suspended outer tube a which is open at both ends and vertically adjustable, the liquid being drawn from the level at which the lower end of the tube a is adjusted and passing up the annular space between the tubes to the top of the discharge tube b. In the form shown, two tubes b, b<1> of different heights are employed, the corresponding outer tubes a, a<1> being connected by a chain passing over a chain pulley. Sluice valves are provided so that either pair may be used alone. One pair of tubes draws off from the upper part of the tank and the other from the lower, the arrangement avoiding the need for a long single tube.
