Convention date, Aug. 5, 1937..[Class 46] In a press having a series of plunger-bearing plates mounted in column formation between a resistance head and a hydraulic ram, a series of rings being interposed one between each pair of plates, each ring slidably receiving the plunger of a bearing plate, hydraulic means operable independently of the ram are provided for forcing all the rings against the rear faces of the plates to seal the press chambers formed in the rings, during the filling of the chambers. In the construction shown, a number of press units are mounted between a ram 28 and a resistance head 21, each unit comprising a plunger 53 fixed to a plate 52 and a ring 54 in which the plunger is slidably engaged. Except for the end plate 52<1>, all the plates and all the plungers are formed with circular series of perforations communicating with circular and radial grooves in that face of each plunger which abuts against a plate 52, the radial grooves leading to the lower portion of the periphery of each plunger. Each plunger and plate 52 carries a filter pad 60 consisting of an inner metallic screen of course mesh and an outer metallic screen of very fine mesh. The liquid to be pressed is supplied to the chambers 55 through axial passages 68, 67. The plates are supported for sliding movement by means of links 42, 45. The links 42 have tongues 43 engaged in grooves in rails 39, and the links 45 have tongues 46 engaged in grooves in the links 42. Hook-like ends 48, 49 are formed on the links 42, 45 respectively. In order that each ring 54 may be pressed tightly against the plate 52 of the next unit hydraulic jack devices are provided, Each ring 54 is provided with four cylinders 80, each receiving a piston 81. Liquid under pressure supplied through pipes 86 and a flexible pipe 87 from a manifold 88 forces the pistons 81 against the plunger-bearing plate 52 of one unit and thereafter moves the ring 54 tightly against the plate of the next unit. A relief valve 90 is provided adapted to open on excess pressure being obtained in the manifold 88. At the end of the pressing operation the plates 52 are spread apart by means of the links 42, 45 and the rings 54 are telescoped over the plungers 53 to allow removal of the pressed cakes. For this purpose hydraulic jacks are provided, two for each ring 54. Each jack, which is interposed between a ring 54 and a plate 52, consists of a cylinder 92 receiving a piston 93. Control valves are mounted on a block 100, one for each pair of cylinders whereby the rings 54 may be shifted one at a time successively, under manual control.
