512,234. Electric control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. April 5, 1939, No. 10687. Convention date, April 8, 1938. [Class 40 (i)] Tracer mechanism for controlling the movements of a machine tool in accordance with the shape of a pattern comprises a feeler 2 mounted on a spindle 1 slidably mounted under the control of a spring 22 in a tube 3 which is universally mounted ir. a bearing 6 in a holder 8. As shown, the spindle 1 carries the armature 4 of a pair of coils 5, 5<1> connected in the depth control circuit and mounted on the tube 3 which also carries the armature 12 of pairs of coils 13, 14 arranged at right angles on the casing 10 and connected in the lateral control circuits, e.g., Wheatstone bridge circuits of the tool. Pairs of springs 18, 19 tend to centralize the tube 3. To avoid magnetic interference between the pairs of coils 13, 14, the coils are mounted with a ring of aluminium and each pair is provided with a separate magnetic yoke. Instead of the inductive control devices shown, mechanically operated contacts may be used.
