Abstract
330,882. Coates, H. March 15, 1929. Copying-mechanism.-In a, copying machine of the type in which the movements of the cutter are controlled by a tracer which moves over a pattern, the tracer is gyrostatically controlled by means of a. rotating mass associated with the tracercarrier. The tracer 11, preferably of a lenticular shape identical with the cutter profile is mounted in a sleeve 12 carried on the stator 13 of an electric motor which is mounted in a gimbal ring 14 supported on arms 16, carried on the casing 10, the trunnions 17 hawing slight play in the casing. The sleeve 12 is centred by means of a number of adjustable radially-arranged springs 18. The springs 18 and the gyrostatic action of the motor armature resist any lateral movement of the tracer 11. The motor shaft 23 drives through a universal coupling 24 a fly-wheel member 22 whose periphery is engaged by rollers 28 mounted on the arms 26 of a number of bell-crank levers which are pivoted at 25 to arms 15 secured to the motor casing. The long arms 27 of the bell cranks carry contacts 29 coacting with oppositely-disposed contacts 30, 31 mounted in the casing. While the tracer is not engaging the pattern the motor casing is pushed forward by springs acting on the arms 16 and the forward feed contacts 29, 31 are engaged. If however the motor is moved to the right t in Fig. 1 or is tilted from its normal position one or more of the bell cranks will be shifted to engage the contacts 29, 30 which produce a withdrawal movement of the cutter and tracer. The contacts 31 are connected with diametrallvopposite pairs in series, as shown in Fig. 3, so that forward feed only occurs when opposite pairs of contacts 31 are both engaged. The withdrawal contacts 30 are, however, connected in parallel to mains 33, 34 so that when any contact 30 is engaged through the tracer encountering the pattern the tracer and cutter are at once withdrawn. The controlling springs 18 and 33<1> are adjusted according to the degree of sensitivity required.
