Abstract

512,229. Conditioning air. LODGE-COTTRELL, Ltd., (Research Corporation of New York.). Feb. 2, 1939, No. 3571. [Class 137] Air is conditioned by adjustment of its temperature and humidity and by removal of suspended particles of dust or mist, the air being brought into contact with an extended surface of hygroscopic liquid maintained at a constant temperature and then subjected to the action of a high tension electrical field. The air enters a casing 10 by an inlet 11 and passes up tubes 20 in each of which is a discharge electrode member 14, each tube providing a complementaryextended surface electrode for the collection of particles precipitated from the air. A solution of calcium chloride is circulated by a pump 25 from a sump 13 to a reservoir 22 and overflows over the inner surfaces of the tubes 20. Cooling water from a pipe 27 flows through a cooling jacket 26 and through the space surrounding the tubes 20 thus maintaining the hygroscopic liquid at a predetermined temperature. The concentration of the hygroscopic liquid is maintained constant by suitable control means. In modifications the electrostatic dust precipitator is separate from the humidity control as in Fig. 3, in which the gas first passes through staggered baffles 41 on to which is delivered the hygroscopic liquid from sprays 40. The entrained liquid carried by the air is precipitated on the inner surfaces of tubes 42.
