Abstract

511.863. Shuttleless looms. SEAL & CO., Ltd., H., and WEBSTER, J. Feb. 25, 1938, No. 6045. [Classes 142 (ii) and 142 (iv)] In weaving elastic fabrics, trimmings, strapping, webs, ribbons &c. wefts from stationary supplies are inserted simultaneously from opposite sides of the loom into the same or a double shed by pivoted or reciprocating weft layers or carriers 15, 15a, which are furnished with spring tensioning and take up devices 17, 18. The weft loops are temporarily retained at the selvages by weft holders, which may comprise bent wire fingers 21, 21a connected to uprights on a horizontal bar 23. This is carried by a cam-controlled lever 30 and has an arm 28 linked to a cam-controlled lever 26, so that the weft holder is moved away from the fell before the beat-up. Weft holders may be arranged to pass through the warp threads at spaced points to prevent the first pick of each weft assuming an arcuate form and may comprise wires secured in grooves in a plate. They may be inserted from above or below and be pivoted to the breast beam. The battens may be suspended and have a long board with several rear apertures or windows for reeds 13 so that several webs may be woven. The weft layers may operate in superposed sheds comprising central rubber warp threads, which do not appear on the surfaces of the fabric, one carrier laying successive wefts in one shed, and the other carrier in the other shed, or otherwise. Means may be used for varying the heights at which the carriers operate, and such carrier may insert several, say four, wefts drawn from separate bobbins. The wefts may extend around warp wires along each selvage and be gradually drawn off them as the fabric is taken up. This may pass under a wire 33. The wefts may pass through porcelain guiding eyes 16 and spring controlled tension eyes 17 on upper and lower carriers on reciprocating wooden rods 19 guided by headed rollers 20, a metal rubbing plate being attached to the lay board behind each rod. Or the carriers may comprise eyed fingers which are reciprocated or swung about vertical pivots. As shown in Fig. 3, the bights of each double pick are located slightly inwards of the selvage.
