Abstract

511,700. Viscose and protein filaments, films, &c. AMBROSIO, A. D', and CORBELLINI, A. Feb. 23, 1938, No. 5679. [Class 2 (ii)] Filaments, ribbons, sheets and the like are prepared from viscose with which has been mixed a mass obtained by mixing and kneading a protein material insoluble in alkali with an alkali sulphide solution. Protein materials specified are horn, hooves, nails, hair and wool waste, gluten and ossein. Suitable proportions are 100 parts of protein to 150-300 parts of a 5-15 per cent. aqueous solution of alkali sulphide. The filaments produced may have a protein content up to 90 per cent. After degassing the protein-viscose solution and coagulating it in a wet coagulating bath, the filaments and the like obtained are tanned in a bath containing a protein insolubilizing agent, e.g., aldehyde, a water-soluble aluminium salt, and if desired, a weak organic acid, e.g., lactic acid. The tanning may take place in part at room temperature and in part at 45-50‹C., and after being washed, the products may be dried at 100-105‹C. Substances such as titanium dioxide, barium carbonate and insoluble silicates may be precipitated in or on the filaments. Specification 255,623, [Class 2 (ii)], is referred to.
