Abstract

511,643. Making rods and wire. MAUTSCH, R. Tune 30, 1938, No. 19475. [Classes 83 (ii) and 33 (iv)] Rolling; shearing.-Small sectional rod or wire is made by shearing large pieces of metal, which may be scrap, into fine shreds which are passed immediately, to avoid oxidation, to rolls which cause them to cohere into a continuous length. Large scrap such as old ships plates, axles, shafts &c. after being cleaned may be used. As shown, an electric motor 3 drives a shaft 4 and thereby by worm gearing 14 and belt gearing a feed roller 20, and by bevel gearing 5 a crank shaft 7 on which are mounted cranks 8 transmitting motion to cutters 10. The cutters are V- shaped and shear the large metal piece 2 into thin elements 36 which fall by gravity through a hopper 39, drum 38, hopper 37 to a position between consolidatry rolls 40, 42. From the rolls the continuous length formed may pass to a winding drum 53 or may be sheared by a cutter 44 into suitable lengths. The shearing cutters which are shown in Fig. 3 have saw teeth 28 and one section 34 is arranged with a cut out part 32 for the part 33 of the other section 34 to be positioned. The length of material may be passed through rolls heated by electric current and in Fig. 6 is shown the passage between rollers 57 connected to a transformer 58 the length 55 of wire forming the electrode of an electric furnace 56, having a slag outlet at 59 and an exit 60 for the product, which passes a cooling chamber 61 and thereby by rolls 64-68 to a wire drawing machine 51 and winding reel 53. Cutters 44 may be provided.
