510,926. Metal-working oils. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Aug. 19, 1938, No. 24412. Convention date, Nov. 12, 1937. [Class 91] A clean and transparent composition for use as a cutting oil or stamping lubricant consists of a predominating proportion of a mildly sulphurized mineral lubricating oil containing a small proportion of sulphur in a soluble, corrosive form and an ester of an acid of phosphorus. An amount of sulphur of 0.5 to 2 per cent. may be added to the oil. The sulphur may be in the form of a corrosive compound formed by the direct action of a sulphurizing agent on the oil under mild conditions. The ester may be tricresyl phosphite or phosphate. In an example, a straight mineral distillate of viscosity 100 secs. Saybolt at 100‹F. is heated with 2 per cent. of sulphur at 300‹F. for 0.5 to 1 hour till the sulphur is dissolved. The oil is cooled and 2 per cent. of tricresyl phosphate added. The product sustained 15 units of weight then tested on the Ahnen machine as compared with 3 to 4 units for the untreated oil.
