Abstract
510,812. Hydraulic presses. MULLER, J. A., and TUCKER, W. R. Feb. 14, 1938, No. 4604. Convention date, May 14, 1937. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Group V] A device for moulding plastic materials comprises a fixed die 10, Fig. 4, a co-operating hydraulically-operated die 11, and movable injection nozzles 73 adapted to inject the material to be moulded through inlets 14 formed between the surfaces of the closed mould parts or dies 10, 11. The nozzles may supply materials of different colours. The movable die 11 is carried by an hydraulically-operated plunger 17, Fig. 3, movable in a cylinder 18 connected at its upper part with a surge valve 40 and with an inlet 159 for fluid. A fixed plunger 28 is arranged within the main plunger 17 and is provided with inlet and exhaust connections 177, 178 for fluid pressure, whereby the main plunger may be lowered rapidly to close the dies, fluid then being admitted through the inlet 159 to hold the dies forcibly together during the injection operation. The nozzles 73, Figs. 2 and 4, together with hoppers 87 for plastic material are carried on slides 56 and are moved to and from the inlets 14 by hydraulically-operated plungers 108, 109. Each nozzle is heated by circulation of fluid around ribs 62 in a forward part that is insulated at 74 from a cooled tubular part 82 fed by a motor-driven worm 84 with powdered material from the hopper 87. In operation, the nozzles are moved into the inlets 14 in the mould parts, and plungers 125 are advanced by hydraulicallyoperated pistons 122 to inject the material between the mould or die parts. The plungers 125 are adjustably connected to their pistons 122, and the operating pistons 108, 109 to the slide 56, whereby the nozzles are adjusted to die or mould parts of different dimensions. The control of the fluid for operating the die-closing ram, and the control of the motor for operating the worm 84 are effected by switches operated by the movements of the nozzle-carrying slides and of the ejecting plungers 125.
