Abstract
510,484. Syringes. COLE, S. F. July 9, 1938, No. 20374. [Class 81 (ii)] A syringe for medical and like purposes comprises a stop member 21 adjustable with respect to the syringe barrel 1 for limiting the stroke of the plunger 7, the stop member being connected to a sleeve 11a and b which is screw-threaded on the barrel and the edge 15 of which co-operates as an indication with a scale 4 provided on the barrel, the said edge bearing a second scale 14 which co-operates with the longitudinal index line on the barrel, so as to allow the adjusting or reading of fractions on the first scale. The barrel may be of glass having a screw threaded collar 6 cemented to the upper part which engages with the interiorly threaded part 11a of the sleeve. On this is mounted the part 11b which, in addition to the scale has two finger grips 23. At the outer end of the sleeve is mounted the cap 16 having the stop 21 which surrounds the push rod 9 attached to the plunger. When the sleeve is adjusted to the zero graduation the stop, engages the end of the plunger and pushes it to the fully discharged position. In order to prevent the scale being hidden by the fingers when holding the end of the barrel the scale is offset from the end and the plunger correspondingly lengthened. In order to lock the sleeve in a predetermined position the part of 11a over which the part 11b fits is provided with two longitudinal slots 25 the region so treated being flattened, the flattening being progressively increased towards the part 20, thus providing a wedge shaped flexible tongue 24. In the part of 11b which fits over part 11a and which covers the flexible tongue is a slot through which protrudes a member 27 having a wedge-shaped inner surface complementary to the tongue and which when pusb ed towards the nozzle forces the tongue inwards, thus locking the sleeve in position on the barrel by the pressure between their threaded portions. In modifications the barrel and collar 7 may be in one and formed of metal or other less fragile material. The outer end of the plunger may also be provided with an outwardly projecting flange between which and the end of the barrel is accommodated a spring to withdraw the plunger. In operation the sleeve is set and if desired locked at the desired volume and the plunger withdrawn until prevented by the stop. The syringe may then be operated in the normal manner or the plunger may be propelled by rotating the sleeve in the manner of a micrometer.
