[Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Fast dyeings are produced by applying to the fibre a sulphonic acid or a sulphonate of a hydroxynaphtho-pseudo-azimide of the formula wherein R =an aromatic radical which contains an amino group capable of being diazotized and may contain one or more further substituents, then diazotizing the compound on the fibre and coupling it with itself. The process may be applied to cellulose and regenerated celluloses or to mixtures of these fibres with animal fibres. In some cases the dyeings may be after-treated with agents yielding metal, e.g. a copper compound. In the examples : (1) wool is treated with a solution of the ammonium salt of 2-N- (3<1> - aminophenyl) - 1 : 2 . pseudo - azimino - 5 - naphthol-7-sulphonic acid and ammonium sulphate, rinsed, treated with a solution of sodium nitrite and formic or sulphuric acid and developed with aqueous ammonia ; (2) and (3) similar to (1) using the corresponding 2-N-(4'- aminophenyl)- and 2-N-(4<1>-methoxy-3<1>-aminophenyl) derivatives ; (4) a mixed yarn of wool and viscose is treated in a bath containing the ammonium salt of 2-N-(3<11>-aminobenzoyl-3<1>- aminophenyl) -1 : 2-pseudoazimino-5-naphthol- 7-sulphonic acid (made by condensing the azimino compound of (1) with m-nitrobenzoyl chloride and reducing), ammonium sulphate and sodium sulphate, diazotized in a bath containing sodium nitrite, sodium dibutylnaphthalene sulphonate (cf. Specification 246,817, [Class 2 (iii)]) and hydrochloric acid and developed with aqueous ammonia containing an ethylene oxide-octodecyl alcohol condensation product ; (5) similar to (4) using 2-N-(5<1>- amino - 2<1> - naphthyl) 1 : 2 - pseudoazimino - 5 - naphthol-7-sulphonic acid. Other azimino derivatives specified are the 2-N-( 4<1>-amino-2<1>. methoxy-, 2<1>-ethoxy- or 2<1>-hydroxyphenyl) and 2-N -[4<1>-amino-2<1>- (p-toluenesulphonyl) -phenyl] derivatives.
