Abstract
509,420. Sheet piling. HOMEWOOD, L. S. G. Jan. 14, 1938, No. 1329. [Class 68 (ii)] Spaced parallel rows of outer members are connected by transverse diaphragm members which engage with the outer members in such a way as to lock adjacent members of each row to one another. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the transverse diaphragm members 6 are formed with double dovetailed ends which engage with corresponding recesses in flanges 2 at the ends of the outer members 1. The connections may be of T or other shape, having the same locking effect. In the modification shown in Fig. 6, the diaphragm members 6 may have secured to them plates 10, 11 which engage flanges 2 on the ends of the members 1. Continuous reinforced concrete walls may be constructed by filling up the rectangular spaces formed by the sheet piling, the transverse diaphragm members 6 being then withdrawn. A pile box consisting of two outer sheet piles 1 spaced apart by diaphragm 6, each box being keyed to the adjacent box, may be driven by a central mandrel which carries the piling members down with it. A shoe or block for the bottom of the box may be driven down with the mandrel after which the mandrel is withdrawn and the box is filled with concrete.
