Abstract
509,407. Dyeing ; artificial silk ; resinous condensation products. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and MORTON, T. H. Jan. 11, 1938, No. 904. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] The dyeing properties of textile materials comprising cellulose or its derivatives which do not contain protein substances or their derivatives or basic amino or imino groups, are improved by incorporating therein a ureaformaldehyde or a thiourea formaldehyde precondensate in admixture with a product obtained by reacting cyanamide and formaldehyde under acid or neutral conditions (or with a mixture thereof) and thereafter heating the materials. The precondensates are watersoluble products formed by reacting urea or thiourea and formaldehyde for a short time in neutral or slightly acid or alkaline conditions. The treatment may be effected by impregnating the textiles with a solution or dispersion of the condensation products or the latter may be added to the solution of cellulose, e.g. viscose, or cellulose derivative, e.g. cellulose acetate, from which artificial threads are produced. An acid or potentially acid catalyst for promoting the insolubilization of the resins in the fibre may be added to the mixture which is incorporated in the material, suitable catalysts being sulphuric and tartaric acids, potassium tetroxalate, alum and ammonium sulphate. In the example, viscose staple fibre fabric is padded with a solution containing cyanamide, formaldehyde, a soluble thiourea-formaldehyde complex and ammonium sulphate, dried and heated for 15 minutes at 150‹ C. when it possesses a good affinity for acid dyes. Specifications 484,901 and 506,793 are referred to.
