5 0 9 , 1 4 4 . Lifting-jacks. NILSON, L. D. Dec. 7, 1937, No. 33877: [Class 78 (iii)] A jack for engaging the bumpers of motor vehicles comprising a cylinder 18 with ball-jointed folding foot 10, and a piston 24 integrally connected by its hollow rod 26 to a guide sleeve 20 closely embracing the cylinder 18. The pump rod 60 is connected to a second guide sleeve 68 closely embracing the upper part of the sleeve 20. On raising the rod 60 a vacuum is formed in the chamber 38, thus causing the oil in the upper part of the chambers to force the valve 48 off its seat against the pressure of the spring 52 and admit oil to the chamber 38 through the ports 70. On the return stroke the valve 48 is reclosed and the valve 54 forced open to deliver the oil below the piston 24. A byepass 44 limits the lift of the piston. To lower, the rod 60 is depressed further than usual so that it first opens the valve 48 positively by direct contact therewith. Afterwards, by rotating the rod 60 at' this depth, screw mechanism 72 is brought into action to lower it further and so cause the tail-piece of the valve 48 to engage and depress the valve 54 to any desired extent so that controlled lowering occurs under the weight of the load. A bumper-engaging crutch is secured at any desired height on the member 20 by a split clamping sleeve.
