[Class 120 (iii)] Filaments, fibres, yarns, &c. are crimped by deforming them by lateral pressure locally applied in the presence of an agent adapted to soften the substance of the filaments &c., and by simultaneously rubbing the materials in a direction transverse to the direction of application of the pressure, the deformed materials being then removed from the influence of the softening agent so as to set the deformations therein ; the pressure may be applied by passing the filaments &c. between rollers having intermeshing corrugations and the softening agent may be hot water or wet steam, which may contain the vapours of another softening agent and a liquid adapted to facilitate the softening of the material may be applied thereto before the application of the lateral pressure. As shown, the rollers 13, 14 having intermeshing corrugations 15 are mounted within a jacketed chamber 6 and are geared together and driven from outside the chamber by chain and sprocket gearing ; the filaments &c. 1 pass into.and out of the chamber through small slits 12, 33 and before passing between the rollers is subjected to steam from a jet 31 supplied by a pipe 32. The filaments &c. pass from a supply, through a tension device, and over a roller to a guide 11 before entering the chamber and through a guide 34 after leaving the chamber on the way to a take-up device. The shaft of the roller 14 and its gear-wheel is slidingly mounted in its bearings 18, one end of the shaft bearing against a spring- pressed ball and the face of the gear-wheel carrying projections 24 which engage a fixed projection 25 as the rollers rotate and cause the roller 14 to move transversely and rub the filaments &c. The chamber has a drain cock 36 and one side may be removable for threading the filaments &c. in the slits 12, 33 which are formed by long slots overlapped by the side plates of the chamber ; escape of steam from the chamber and undue stretching of the filaments &c. may be prevented by compressed air supplied to auxiliary chambers covering the slits 12, 33, e.g. in the manner described in Specifications 443,707 and 443,773, [both in Group IV]. The chamber may be jacketed with steam, e.g. when the softening agent applied to the filaments &c. is a mixture of air and a solvent vapour. The crimped filaments may pass from between the rollers, around the lower roller and between it and a rubber nip roller to the surface of a hollow heating element fed with steam.
