Abstract

508,956. Speed governors. MOUNTBATTEN, LORD L. Jan. 6, 1938, Nos. 388, 389 and 27104. [Class 57] [Also in Groups XXXVIII and XIX] In a system for maintaining a warship in a fixed position relatively to another ship, an instrument is provided which determines the co-ordinates in the direction of the course being steered, and at right angles thereto of the ship's displacement from its correct position with respect to the other ship and is associated with means for transmitting the values of the coordinates for effecting a controlled variation of the ship's speed and/or course. Fig. 1 shows the system, the equipment enclosed within the zones I ... IV indicated by the dotted lines being mounted in the after superstructure so as to be visible to a following ship, the bridge, wheel house and engine room respectively. The port and starboard engine shafts 1, 2 are coupled through a differential 3 to a shaft 4 which rotates at a speed proportional to the ship's speed, and controls one element of a differential 5. The differential 5 is also controlled by a shaft 6 driven by a constant speed motor 7 through a variable speed gear 8, 10 which is set in a position corresponding to the correct speed of the ship by the standard engine revolution telegraph 11a. The differential 5 controls a step-by-step transmitter 14 connected to a receiver 16, the arrangement being such that the receiver 16 occupies a zero position and the transmitter remains inoperative when the ship is travelling at the correct speed. If the ship lags or leads its correct position, the receiver is deflected and the engines are controlled manually or automatically to bring the receiver back to zero and the ship into its correct station. In order to correct the inevitable slight wandering of the ship from its course due, say, to fluctuations of the speed of the motor 7 and the lack of proportionality between the ship's speed and the engine speed, a correction system incorporating a bearing indicator is employed.
