Abstract

508,818. Cosmetic preparations ; triethanolamine salts. STOCKELBACH, F. E. E. July 18, 1938, No. 21282. [Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group IV] The triethanolamine salt of o-cresotinic acid is prepared by reacting the amine with about an equimolecular proportion of the acid, suitably at 100‹ C. The triethanolamine salt of 2 : 3- hydroxynaphthoic acid is prepared similarly. The salts have the property of absorbing ultraviolet light, and may be used for preparing cosmetic creams and lotions for preventing sunburn and for promoting tan pigmentation of the skin. For these purposes, the salts may be used as such or as an aqueous or alcoholic solution or in association with a vehicle such as ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerol or an oil or wax. In a review of the prior art, the Specification refers to the use, for similar purposes, of menthyl salicylate (U.S.A. Specification 2,041,874, quinine bisulphate, resorcinol and R-salt. Specification 414,077, [Group III], also is referred to.
