Abstract
508,786. Gauging-apparatus; photo-electric control apparatus. FARRER, J. O. (Continental Can Co., Inc.) Dec. 30, 1937, No. 36167. [Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] Apparatus for sorting sheets according to thickness comprises two or more sensing devices adapted to be moved by spaced thickness portions of material moving therepast, and two or more control switches, one for each sensing device and actuable thereby, the switches being connected in series with the ejecting mechanism whereby operation of the latter is controlled only when both or all the switches are actuated. The sheets S to be gauged are passed over rollers 9 carried by brackets 8 sliding in parallel guides and adjustable by micrometer screws 14. The rollers 9 are in advance of one another and not in alignment. Opposite the rollers 9 are rollers 29 carried by the short arms of L-shaped levers 28 pivoted about axes 30 which also while parallel are not in alignment. The levers are normally held against screw stops 31 by springs 32 the compression on which is adjustable by screws. The upper, ends of the levers carry spring contacts 25 co-operating with micro-switches 24 of type described in Specification 419,917. When a sheet of the correct thickness and over passes between the rollers, the circuit of a solenoid 41 is made to lower a deflector 38 into a hole 42 and deflect the plate between feed rollers 44 to a conveyer 45. When the pile of plates is sorted the gauge is set for a minimum thickness and the plates passed through again. Instead, two sets of gauging rollers may be used. In a modification, the lower roller is on a fixed axis while the upper roller 51 is on the rod of a plunger 59 and is normally urged towards the roller by a spring 60. Above the plunger 59 is a small plunger 63 separated therefrom by liquid. This plunger is pivoted to the short arm of a twoarmed lever 72, 73 the long arm being bifurcated and arranged to move in front of a -slit 69 through which emerges a beam of light. Each time a sheet separates the gauge rollers a sufficient distance to cause the lever 72 to uncover the slit 69, the beam falls on a photo electric cell and energizes a relay to move the deflector.
