[Class 2 (iii)] Compounds of the formula where X is hydrogen or an amino, alkylamino, alkylolamino or arylamino radicle and in which the arylamino-, anthraquinone-, and benzanthrone-radicles may be substituted but must not contain aroylamino . groups, are treated with sulphonating agents. Substituents specified are halogen, cyano; hydroxy, alkoxy, phenoxy and alkyl. The sulphonation may be carried out with oleum or chlorsulphonic acid, if desired in presence of boric acid or mercury salts, or by replacement of halogen atoms by heating with alkali sulphites in solvents such as phenol. The products dye wool grey, reddish-brown, or yellow shades. The starting materials are made by condensation of an aminoanthraquihone with a Bz-hatogenbenzanthrone or a halogenanthraquinone with a Bz-aminobenzanthrone. In examples, the. following bodies are treated with sulphonating agents : (1) 1-(Bz. 1-benzanthronylamino) anthraquinone itself and its substitution products containing in 4-position of the anthraquinone nucleus the following radicles : (a) anilido-,-(b) o or p-toluido-, (c) p-acetamidoanilido-, (d) m- or p-chloranilido-, (e) 2.5- dichloranilido-, (#) p-aminoanilido-, (g) pphenylanilido-, (h) 2:5-dimethylanilido-, (i), mesidino-, (j), alpha- or, #-naphthylamino-, (k) amino-, and (l), ethanolamino ; (2) 1.-(Bz.1- benzanthronylamino) anthraquinones containing in 5-position a p-toluido, an amino, or a methylamino group;. (3) 1.4-anilido-Bz. 1- (6-brom- or 2-methyl-benzanthronylamino)- anthraquinone ; (4) 1.4-anilido-Bz:2-benzanthronylamino-anthraquinone. Also in examples, 1.4-anilido-Bz.1-(6-brombenzanthronylamino)-2 bromanthraquinone is reacted with potassium sulphite in phenol.
