Abstract

The invention comprises dyes of the formula <FORM:0687807/IV (c)/1> in which X is hydrogen or methyl, R is hydrogen or CH2OCH2CH2OZ, Z is hydrogen, hydroxy-alkyl, or alkoxyalkyl, and Y is hydrogen, hydroxy, or <FORM:0687807/IV (c)/2> They dye cellulose acetate violet to blue shades. The examples refer to 1-hydroxy-4-anilino-anthraquinones in which X and R are hydrogen and Z is hydrogen, b -methoxyethyl, or b -hydroxyethyl, or in which X is methyl, Z is hydrogen and R is hydrogen or -CH2.OCH2. CH2OH, and describes their preparation from quinizarin and leucoquinizarin, the appropriate amine, and boric acid. Also, further examples refer to 1,4-dianilinoanthraquinones having a b -hydroxyethoxymethyl radical in a meta position of each anilino nucleus, with and without methyl in para position, and with the same radical in both meta positions of each nucleus and a methyl in para-position, again prepared from quinizarin and leuco-quinizarin. Examples also refer to a 1,5,8-trihydroxy-4-anilino-anthraquinone having a b - hydroxyethoxymethyl radical in a meta position of the aniline nucleus and prepared by the same method, and to a 1,5 - dihydroxy - 4,8 - dianilino - anthraquinone having a b -hydroxyethoxymethyl radical in a meta position of each aniline nucleus, prepared by the same method and also by removal of the sulpho groups from the corresponding disulphonic acid by use of ammonium hydroxide and sodium hydrosulphite.
