508,672. Binaural and directional systems. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. March 9, 1939, No. 7602. Convention date, March 22, 1938. [Class 40 (iv)] In stereophonic sound recording, particularly in connection with talking pictures, two records 74, 75 are first made by means of " close-up " and " distant " microphones respectively, so that one contains mainly direct sound energy and the other mainly reverberant energy, and these records are then reproduced simultaneously over re-recording channels 13, 14 in which the sound currents are combined in adjustable proportions by means of volume controls 78, 79, 22, 23, 26, 27, to produce two records 87, 88 which may be reproduced by spaced loudspeakers to give a desired stereophonic effect. The two records may be side by side on the talking picture film so that both may be scanned by single-channel reprodacing apparatus in theatres not equipped with stereophonic apparatus. The picture record may be projected as a guide to the operator in making the adjustments, and the sound may be produced by spaced loudspeakers 84, 85 fed from the channels 13, 14.
