508,620. Valves; actuating Bowden &c. mechanism. WHEATON, A. W. May 9, 1938, No. 13813. [Class 135] [Also in Group XXXI] In the mechanism for selectively actuating remote devices such as the emergency valves of a compartment tank truck described in Specification 504,289, locking means are provided which, when a selector rod has been coupled with its actuating means prevent the remaining rods from being coupled with their actuating means. As in Specification 504,289, a number of selector rods 1 ... 6 are arranged in pairs so as to be slidable through the walls of a housing 11 and are connected by swivels 28 to cables 27 connected to the emergency valves, the cables extending through conduits 26 connected to an end bracket 24. The actuating means for each pair of rods comprises as before a member 31 with upper and lower sleeves 32, 33 slidable along the rods, say 1, 2, against a spring 36. Each rod carries a coupling pin 37 slidable in a slot 34. The slot 34 with its actuator block 31 is moved clear of the pin 3<7> by the spring 36 in a certain position of a transverse rotatable locking rod 40. As before, each actuating member carries a roller 38 co-operable with a cam 39 on a transverse shaft 14. The latter carries a hand lever 15 with a latch lug 17 which co-operates with a similar lug 16 on a spring-biassed lever 19 which may be released manually or by the fusion of a link 20 in case of fire or from the front end of the truck by a cable 22. Each actuator block 31 carries a vertical pin 41, 42 or 43 which is urged against the looking rod 40 by one of the springs 36. The rod 40 has three circumferentially spaced flat bottomed recesses 44, 45, 46 corresponding to the pins 41, 42, 43 such that only one pin at once can engage the bottom of its recess. In this position, the pins 37 of, say, the rods 1, 2, are clear of their slots 34 and either rod may be rotated so that its pin moves behind the shoulder 35 ready for axial movement by the block 31. The other rods cannot be rotated as their coupling pins 37 are still locked in the slots 34. Each pair of rods has a slidable bolt 57, Fig. 9, arranged in the rear wall of the housing 11 and co-operable with flats 59 on the rods so that when one rod has been rotated to couple it to its actuating block, the other rod is locked against rotation. The rod 40 carries a finger piece 47 and a, dial 48 co-operable with a fixed pointer. To prevent movement of the rod 40 when a valve has been actuated, a cam 56 on the shaft 14 moves to allow a spring-biassed plunger 51 with a reduced end 52 to pass.below the rod 40 so that its thick part co-operates with one of three flats 50 on the rod which correspond to the recesses 44, 45, 46. Each of the knobs 29 on the respective selector rods has a pointer or arrow head 30.
