Abstract

507,708. Edge trimmers. WYNDHAM, J. H. June 16, 1938, No. 17962. [Class 6 (ii)] In an edge trimmer, the rotary cutter 29, the axis of which lies along the direction of travel, co-operates with a ledger blade supported on a forwardly extending guide 18 which lifts over. hanging grass into the path of the blades, and is driven through bevel gear 24 from the rear roller 21, and a front supporting roller is arranged near the front of the guide 18. Both rollers may be tapered to hold the guide against the edge of the lawn. The side plate 17, 18, 19 is U-shaped and the rotary cutter is arranged between the limbs 17, 18. The rotary cutter 29 comprises a cylindrical block of metal formed with longitudinal grooves in the trailing edge of which are fitted hard steel cutting blades, the edges of which project slightly beyond the block, Fig. 3 (not shown). The limb 18 may have the surface which bears against the lawn disposed obliquely either permanently or adjustably. The Provisional Specification also describes the use of a horizontal cutting cylinder with its axis disposed obliquely to the line of travel. It states that the guide may act as a tool for trimming the earth at the edge of the lawn, and also that the cutter may be motor driven.
