Abstract

506,186. Handling heavy loads or load-containers. GLEDHILL, W. V., and CROWTHER, H. Dec. 9, 1937, No. 34042. [Class 78 (iv)] A load-platform used to support a container or heavy load when not on the transfer vehicle is made yield able to prevent damage when struck by the vehicle as it is run thereunder. Four jacks e are used to support two longitudinal bars c across which bearers b are laid. When the load is supported on the bearers b and the jacks are raised, a vehicle can be run thereunder so that on lowering the jacks again the load will be supported on the crossbars i of the vehicle leaving the bearers b free to be withdrawn laterally. By a reverse process a load can be removed from a vehicle and dropped on to storage trestles placed in position after the unloaded vehicle has been driven away. The cross-bars i of the vehicle may be replaced by recesses in the floor into which the bearers b are lowered. To make the load-platform yieldable, if inadvertently struck by the vehicle, either the heads of the jacks are furnished with wheels d on which the bars c can slide, or the jacks are mounted on wheeled bases, in which latter case the bars c are fixed to the jacks and the pairs of jacks on each side of the apparatus connected by braces.
