[Class 112] In a boot-sole sewing-machine having a curved needle and a similar awl oscillatable about the same axis and penetrating the work on the same side, the two tools being displaceable along their axis of oscillation through a distance equal to the lateral distance between them, the awl is arranged to perform its operation first and the needle is actuated only after axial displacement of the tools in the opposite direction to the feed to bring the needle into the plane in which the awl was, so that it passes through the hole just made; the tools are moved back after each feed movement of the work. In the arrangement shown in back view, the awl a and needle bare secured to carriers c, e respectively, the former being fixed to a shaft d and the latter free on the shaft but prevented from longitudinal movement thereon ; a presser-foot p is formed on a carrier g having an arcuate flange to guide the awl and needle and provided with an actuating arm l on its hub, which is rotatable in a bearing on the frame and itself forms a bearing for the shaft d. The shaft d is movable longitudinally, together with the awl and needle carriers c, e, by a lover m. The carriers c, e have arms carrying pins s for engagement with an operating lever r which oscillates in a fixed plane and is engaged with and disengaged from the pins s alternately by the movement of the carriers c, e with the shaft d, so that the awl and needle are operated' alternately.
