506,036. Distilling oils &c. by contact with molten materials; film evaporators. PRAY, W: O. Nov. 18, 1937, No. 31719. [Class 32] In the heat treatment of liquids, e.g. distilling and cracking oils, by flowing the liquid in countercurrent over the surface of a stream of molten material, heat absorbed from the molten material by alternately immersing therein and removing therefrom a plurality of surfaces is transferred to the liquid taken up in films on the surfaces. A still A is partly filled with molten metal which is continuously circulated by a pump C through the still and a coil B in compartment D of a furnace. Oil preheated in coil F enters the cylinder through pipe 9 and flowing over the surface of the molten metal is removed through pipe 11 to a constant level tank G, the vapours formed being taken off through line 24. Heat from the interior of the molten metal is transferred to discs 6 mounted on a rotary shaft 4, the discs transferring the heat to the oil films formed thereon in the upper free space of the cylinder. The discs 6 may comprise sheets of steel or alloy and are provided with circular or slotted perforations to permit free movement of the oil and molten metal. Discs of conical, dished or corrugated form may be used. The molten material may comprise lead or lead-tin alloys according to the temperature required.
