Abstract
505,999. Photo-mechanical printing- plates. SCHLESINGER, A. Nov. 19, 1937, No. 31926. [Class 98 (ii)] [Also in Group XVI] Photo-mechanical printing-plates of zinc, aluminium, or other metal are treated so as to form on the image a uniform film of a noiiresinous drying-oil composition which is insoluble in water or printing-ink and is substantially insoluble in the usual washing-liquids. The composition preferably contains a small proportion of a non-drying oil such. as castor oil, and an oxidation catalyst such as manganese dioxide, and preferably consists, in addition, of industrial alcohol, linseed oil, and turpentine or benzol. The plate, to which the image has been applied, is coated with gum which is then removed from the image area ; a layer of varnish and a layer of the composition are applied and finally the gum and overlying layers are removed. The composition may contain a small amount of solvent for the varnish to facilitate binding. The adherence between the metal and the composition may be increased by treating the image with a non- aqueous solution consisting of alcohol and ammonia or iron perchloride and an acid to which calcium chloride or sugar may be added to remove any water present. Specification 407,047; [Group XVI], is referred to.
