Abstract
504,360. Aircraft wings. SPEARPOINT, H. G., and STANWAY, H. Oct. 21, 1937, No. 28651. [Class 4] Air is collected by one or more intakes disposed in the slipstream of the airscrew or airscrews of an aircraft, the intakes being divided into concentric orifices each of which communicates with one or more sections of a continuous slot extending along the entire length of the wings close to their leading edges. A streamlined housing b is provided with visor shutters b<3> adapted to control the flow of air thereinto. Communicating with the housing are three ducts which extend along the leading edge and terminate at the housing end in concentric openings. The ducts are of differing lengths and taper toward the wing tip. The uppermost duct b<2> communicates with a longitudinal slot a over the root portion of the wing, the duct b<1> over the middle portion of the wing and the lowermost duct over the tip portion. The shape of the nosing defining the slot is stated to be such that the air issuing therefrom increases the lift of the wing. Heated air maybe supplied by air entering a cowl c<1> surrounding an exhaust collector ring c<2>.
