Abstract

504,275. Vehicle steering bogies. JONKHOFF, H. W. Sept. 21, 1937, No. 25622. [Class 108 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A vehicle is provided with steerable bogies each including a longitudinal rocking member mounted on a bogie body swivelling about a king pin, one or two steerable wheel assemblies carried by the rocking member each wheel assembly comprising a cross-shaped member one arm of which serves as a means for steering and two arms for mounting the wheels. As shown the rocking member 1 is carried by a spring 30 shackled to the bogie frame 28, Figs. 1 and 4, which, swiyels about a pin 2 in the frame 3. A cross-shaped member 5 is universally jointed to the rocking member 1, the wheels 7 being mounted on the arms 6 while the arm 15 is provided with a tapered roller 13 adapted to coact with surfaces 12 in a member 11 secured to the rocking member 1 to keep the rocking - member and crossshaped member in parallel planes. The arm 8 of the member 5 constitutes the steering arm and the arms 8 of adjacent side by side wheel assemblies are interconnected by ball joints 9 and a rod 18 while the ends of the rocking beams 1 are similarly connected by a rod 16. The other ends of the rocking members 1 are similarly connected to cross-shaped members carrying wheels and steering arms which however are connected together by simple pivoting joints to a rod 18 which may be adjustable as to length. When the vehicle is moved by the draw bar 21 the latter is connected to the rod 18 for moving the steering arms 8 of the wheel assemblies. This is done by means of a member 19 connected by ball joint to the rod 18 and provided with an arm 23 which may be connected to the draw bar 21. When the vehicle to be reversed this arm 23 is released from the draw bar and swung round so as to embrace the rod 16 in the slot 22 of the member 13 and so connect the rods 16 and 18 together. Fig. 8 shows a vehicle having two four-wheeled bogies at each end;
