503,979. Making glass wool. HANNEN, C. Dec. 6, 1937, No. 33692. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1936. [Class 56] In the manufacture of glass wool and slagwool, powdered mineral substances are deposited on the surfaces of the fibres, while the material is still plastic, in order to roughen the surfaces and render the fibres more suitable for spinning and weaving. The powder may consist of sand, glass, asbestos, lime, pumice, &c. with or without the addition of substances that serve as fluxes and promote adhesion. In order to make the fibres thinner and more flexible, they may be treated with liquid or gaseous solvents which are selected according to the dust used. A solvent may be used to roughen the fibres,. only small quantities of dust, or none at all, being added t the glass.
