Abstract
503,932. Gravity switches ; selflevelling arrangements. RUSTONBUCYRUS, Ltd. (Bucyrus-Erie Co.) Oct. 16, 1937, No. 28216. [Class 38 (v)] [Also in Group XXXIII] A self-levelling device for an excavator comprises a switch box 18 on a triangular platform 17 suspended by rods 16 from girders 15 on the main platform of the excavator. This allows the platform 17 to swing freely but remain parallel to the excavator platform, and saves the switch mechanism from lateral shocks. The switch mechanism comprises four cylinders 21 joined in opposite pairs by pipes 22 provided with valves V for preventing surging of mercury contained in the cylinders and pipes. Each cylinder is provided with a piston 26, Fig. 4, which acts on a counterpoised lever 24 pivoted at 25 and carrying an adjustable tilting mercury switch 29. Variations of level of the excavator cause operation of one or more of the four mercury switches 29 which control motor driven pumps driving levelling jacks to keep the excavator level in accordance with the system described in Specification 503,931, [Group XXXV].
