Abstract
503,613. Tunnel kilns. SOC. DES FOURS INDUSTRIELS ET METAJ.- LURGIQUES. Oct. 8, 1937, No. 27347. Convention date, Oct. 9, 1936. [Class 61 (ii)] In a tunnel kiln for ceramic products having preheating, firing, and cooling zones, the firing zone is heated by burners 3, 4 which deliver tangentially to the walls on to longitudinal corrugations 6, the burners on each side being directed upwards and downwards alternately, with the upwardly-directed burners 3 on one side opposite the downwardly-directed ones 4 on the other. The flames from the burners 4 pass to the space 8 between the tops of the trucks 2 and the charge supports 9, and in the hottest part of the firing-zone tubes for the supply of gaseous reagents for acting on the ware are arranged so that the reagents will mix with the heating-gases in this space. The preheating-zone may have sections or different cross-sectional shape or area, e.g. it may comprise sections which are wider and lower than the preceding and succeeding sections, and the cross-sectional' area of the sections may be reduced gradually towards the waste gas outlet end. In one form the tunnel has a wide groove running in a helical manner in the walls. The waste gas outlets are spaced over the height of the kiln.
