503,421. Coating surfaces; coating- compositions. CRAEMER, R. A. Oct. 5, 1937, No. 26998. [Class 95] [Also in Groups XVII and VIII] Relates to a method of dispensing frozen edible products such as ice-cream from a container with the minimum of loss due to adhesion to the container wall. The containers may be paper, cardboard, or parchment cartons, metallic containers or moulds, collapsable paper, &c. containers, or packages formed by ordinary wrapping or by helical winding, such for example as are described in U.S.A. Specification 1,932,169. In order to prevent adhesion, a layer of substance which is liquid at the temperature at which the foodstuff will be removed from the container is applied over the entire surface of the container between it and the contents. The substance may comprise an aqueous solution of a sugar or sugars, ethyl alcohol, glycol or glycerine or any of these. A salt such as common salt may be added to depress the freezing point further. The substance. may be applied by brushing or spraying, and the process may be repeated if necessary. The freezing point should be sufficiently low, e.g. below 15‹ F., and the viscosity should be sufficiently high to cause proper adherence to the container. Gelatine or gum arabic may be added to aid this effect. The substance preferably shows a preferential adhesion to the material of the container, as compared to the contents, and may penetrate to some extent into the material of the container. The coating may be of such a composition as to congeal at storage temperature and to become liquid at dispensing temperature. The container may be pre-coated with paraffin &c. In the case of such water-repellent surfaces it is preferable to use oil as the coating. Glycerine or vegetable oils such as walnut, sunflower or poppyseed oil, and refined mineral oils such as "White Oils," "Crystal oils," and the substances known under the Registered Trade Marks "Lujol," "Oronite" and " Marcol " and by the trade names of Amaline and Wyrol are mentioned.
