503,177. Lubricating oils; substituted polynuclear aromatic compounds. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP DE BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ, and FIFE, J. G. Aug. 26, 1937, No. 24952/38. Divided out of 497,385. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Lubricants for use at high pressures and temperatures are prepared by adding to mineral lubricants between 1 and 10 per cent by weight of oil soluble organic compounds which contain at least two six membered carbocyclic rings, the said compounds also containing one or more substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbon chains containing at least three and preferably five or more carbon atoms, at least two OH or COOH groups or at least one OH and one COOH group being connected direct to the rings, and the said compaundsbeing either sulphur, halogen and phosphorus free or containing sulphur or phosphorus exclusively in a non-reactive or practically non-reactive form, i.e. in the form of a hetero atom in ring systems. The oil soluble compounds added may be prepared by introducing into the molecules of the substances employed according to Specification 497,385 substituted or unsubstituted chains containing at least three carbon atoms which increase the oil-solubility such as alkyl groups. Such oil soluble compounds may be obtained by condensing (a) two molecules of an organic compound the molecules of which contain a sixmembered carbocyclic ring, to which at least one OH or one COOH group is connected directly, together with aliphatic hydrocarbons, e.g. salicyclic acid with a cracked wax distillate, or (b) one molecule of an organic compound the molecules of which contain two six membered carbocyclic rings, to which at least two OH or COOH groups or at least one OH and one COOH group are directly connected, together with aliphatic hydrocarbons. Other examples of oil soluble compounds, (formulae given), which may be added are hexyl-methylene disalicylic acid, 1.2 - dihydroxy - 4 - stearoyl anthraquinone, 1.4-dihydroxy-3-stearoyl anthraquinone, 3 - stearoyl - 1.2.4.5.6.7.8.heptoxy anthraquinone, methylene-disalicylic acid monostearate; phenol " Bakelite-A " stearate (" Bakelite " being a Registered Trade Mark), the monocetyl ester of methylene disalicylic acid, dialkyl methylene disalycilic acid, methylene di-(alkyl salicylic acid), methylene di-(stearoyl resorcinol), methylene di-(stearoyl salicylic acid), methylene di-(stearoyl phenol), methylene di- (p-tertiarybutyl salicylic acid), methylene di- (p-amyl salicylic acid), methylene di-(p-isopropyl salicylic acid), dialkyl methylene diresorcinol, diheptadecyl methylene disalicylic acid, isododecylidene methylene disalicylic acid, 4.4<1>.dihydroxy 3.3<1>.dicarboxylic 5.tridecyl diphenyl, the mixed esters of glycerol with mixed palmitic and stearic acids and either methylene disalicylic acid or aurine tricarboxylic acid, cetyl alizarine and 1.2. dialkyl-3.4.bis-(m-carbomethoxy-p-hydroxybenzoyl) cyclobutane. Methylene di-(stearoyl salicylic acid) is prepared by heating a mixture of 4-stearoyl 2- hydroxybenzoic acid and trioxymethylene. Methylene di-(stearoyl phenol) is prepared by heating a mixture of stearoyl phenol and trioxymethylene. Iso-dodecylidene methylene disalicylic acid is prepared by heating methylene disalicylic acid with aliphatic C12 ketones and anhydrous zinc chloride. Mixed glycerol esters are prepared from glycerol, mixed palmitic and stearic acids and either methylene disalicylic acid or aurine tricarboxylic acid. 1:2. -Dialkyl - 3:4. - bis - (m - carbomethoxy - phydroxybenzoyl) cyclobutanes are prepared by reacting the acid chloride of an alkenyl succinic acid with the methyl ester of salicylic acid.
