Abstract

502,838. Stabilizing chlorinated organic solvents. BELL, J. H. Oct. 25, 1937, No. 29113. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] The decomposition of chlorinated organic solvents in vapour form to generate chlorine acids, is prevented by adding to the solvent a cyclic organic base or an essential oil which vaporizes with the solvent. Solvents specified are, tetra- or trichlor methane, tetra- or trichlorethylene, tri- or tetra-chlor ethane, dichlorethane, chlor benzene, and dichlorbenzenes. Stabilizers specified are, pyridine, methyl and ethyl pyridine, pyrazine, pyrimidine, piperidine, pyrroline, pyrazoline, pyrrolidine, turpentine, pine oil, camphor, wintergreen oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, or mixtures of these. About “ to 1¢ per cent is added. The stabilizer chosen is of similar boiling point to the solvent, for example with trichlorethylene pyridine or a mixture of pyridine, citronella oil and lemon grass oil is used. The stabilized solvent vapours are not decomposed by moisture or metals such as aluminium, and are used for degreasing, cleaning, or extraction. In the extraction of fats, essential oils are preferred as stabilizers. The extract is then freed from solvent and stabilizer by distilling and steaming.
